Raising Breast Cancer Awareness with Nasdaq Women’s Network

Writer: patricia alvaradopatricia alvarado

This past October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month (also known as Pink October), I had the extraordinary and unexpected opportunity to co-organize a micro-version of the Zumba Pink Party for the Nasdaq Women’s Network in Stockholm. Nasdaq, known for being a global leader in the financial services industry, is also committed to promoting wellness and creating supportive spaces for its employees. The event was a wonderful opportunity to combine fitness with a powerful cause—raising awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.

Breaking the Ice

We kicked off the event with a fun icebreaker session, where participants—including special guests and employees—had the chance to get to know one another better. This created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, which set the stage for the rest of the event.

A Powerful Talk on Breast Cancer Awareness

Following the icebreaker, Rowena Lee, a talented and cherished Zumba participant, took the floor to deliver a brief yet impactful talk about the importance of self-exams in the early detection of breast cancer. Rowena’s knowledge and passion were evident as she shared important facts and demonstrated how to perform a self-check.

We were fortunate to be in the employee gym, so we used the mirrors to practice and simulate the self-examination process. It was both an informative and hands-on moment, leaving everyone with a stronger understanding of the importance of self-care and early detection.

Zumba to Empower and Energize

After the informative talk, it was time to get moving! I led a special Zumba class, and the energy in the room was palpable. The combination of music, movement, and empowerment made for a fun and uplifting session, allowing us all to feel energized and connected.

A Memorable Lunch Hour

This event took place during the lunch hour and lasted an hour and a half. Despite the short time frame, it was a meaningful experience for everyone involved. It was a blend of education, empowerment, and fun—making it a memorable and impactful day for all.

A Thank You to Cheryl

I would like to extend a special thank you to Cheryl, the sparkle within Nasdaq, who made this event possible. As a wellness ambassador, Cheryl’s dedication to the health and well-being of her colleagues shone brightly throughout the event. Her support and enthusiasm were instrumental in bringing us to Nasdaq’s workplace, and we are truly grateful for her commitment to promoting wellness in the workplace.

Looking Ahead to More Companies Joining the Cause

We are hopeful that more companies will embrace this kind of wellness initiative in the future, encouraging employees to engage in activities like Zumba to promote health and awareness. By offering such events, companies can create positive impacts on their workforce, encouraging healthier habits and fostering stronger connections among employees.

This experience was a powerful reminder of the importance of community, awareness, and taking care of our health. We look forward to seeing many more companies join this cause and support their employees in such meaningful ways.
